About Dori

Hi! I’m so glad you’ve found your way to Ripening!

Here is the birthy-nutshell version of my story: I’m a birth doula and childbirth educator, but I am also the mama of 2 beautifully busy children. And here’s the thing: that ancient birthing power that rumbled through me as my children were born, it was truly unreal. I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

B's birth“How did that happen? How does the body know?”

These question became a bit of an obsession- I wanted to witness birth again, to hear more of that ancient language, to care for other women in their journey through birth and into motherhood. It didn’t take long to hear the call to become a Doula.

The first birth I attended in Oct 2012 rocked my world. From there I decided to take the DONA Doula training through Douglas College in January 2013. Since then I have also had Breastfeeding Support Training and am honoured to offer new families encouragement as they learn the dance of milk.

March 2014 lit my heart with the power of Birthing From Within. The idea of birth as a rite of passage connected so deeply with my own experiences. As of Jan 2015, I am joined the Dancing Star Birth team, mentoring Birth From Within prenatal classes in East Vancouver. In 2016 I took postpartum doula training through IPPA, and have been since supporting families in the early weeks of parenthood.

In addition to birth work, I balance life in Vancouver with plenty of cooking, beach time, hikes, swimming, foraging, crafting, and kid-cuddles. I am also currently working on my Master’s in Spiritual Care through the Vancouver School of Theology.

Want to go farther back? I am also a visual artist, having completed my BFA in Ceramics and Sculpture through Emily Carr University in 2005. Over the years I have found ways to continue with my studio art practice, and you can find my artwork here.
